FAQ
Who are you?

We are a tiny house building company. We design and build houses on flat bed trailers. Our houses are fully customized to suit the wishes of our clients. Molecule Tiny Homes is a partnership and collaboration between builder/artist brothers-in-law Jason Dietz and Gabriel Williams. The undeniable message that we as a species need to be more forward thinking in how we use the resources of this planet is growing louder all the time.  Tiny houses are a beautiful, efficient illustration of a choice to use and waste less.  We believe that human happiness is not contingent on living in a large space, but in appreciating fully the space we do inhabit. We invite you to explore the liberating possibilities of devoting more of your time to enjoying life, and less to worrying about housing yourself.
Where are you located?
We are located in beautiful Santa Cruz, California.
How does the plumbing work?
The water supply is connected to the house with a garden hose style connection for ease and simplicity.  Water can be supplied through an existing home’s water system, from a tank, well or cistern. This provides cold water to the house and the on-demand propane hot water heater.  All plumbing fixtures are normal including the flush toilet. The drain/sewer for the house is via a 3” ABS pipe that can easily be connected to conventional sewer, septic, or RV style holding tank.   The sinks and tub drains could also easily be separated from the main drain to utilize gray water systems.
Can you do a composting toilet?
Yes. All houses are fully customizable.
How is electricity hooked up?
The house is set up with it’s own service panel, and is fed through a 30 amp RV style plug.  Basically you just plug it in to an adequate power supply.  This could be from a house, or an off grid battery bank with inverter that is charged by solar, wind, conventional generator, or any combination of these.
Is the house solar compatible?
Yes. See above.
Is Financing available?
Unfortunately, no.
How much do the houses cost?
Our base rate for houses is $30-60K depending on how big and how elaborate the design is.
Is the house insulated?
Yes, the house is insulated with R-tech polystyrene foam board, and features double paned low e windows throughout. We can also use cotton or wool insulation if desired.
How is it heated?
Any way you want.  Electric space heaters, or permanently mounted electric heat, small wood or pellet stoves, or propane heat are all easy possibilities.  In a space this small not much heat is needed.  Some houses are finished with heaters, some are left up to the buyer’s preference, and custom finished to suit personal taste.
How do I move it?
We recommend a ¾ or 1 ton truck with dual rear tires, however we also offer delivery and setup for an additional fee.
How long will the house last?
As long as a conventional stick built house.
What kind of components do you use?
Within reason, anything you want.  Our standard houses are built using conventional construction techniques with 2x4, or 2x6 framing, plywood subfloor, wall, and roof sheathing, metal roof, a variety of siding choices from redwood to t1-11 to board and batten.  We usually use plywood for the interior paneling.  We use propane range/ovens.  Sinks, showers, tubs, and toilets are normal and function as they would in a standard home; they’re just smaller.  Floors can be anything from hardwood to pergo to vinyl. If certain components are desired, they can be integrated. Again, the houses are fully customizable.
What kind of trailer do you use?
While the manufacturers and lengths of trailers we use may vary, we always use tandem axle trailers with a weight rating of at least 10k lbs.
Is it permanently attached to the trailer?
Yes, it is thoroughly bolted, screwed, and strapped to the trailer and cannot be removed, however the once it is set up in its permanent or semi-permanent location, a rigid skirt can be added to cover the wheels and crawl space for a more conventional look.  We recommend placing the house on leveling jacks to level the living space, extend tire life, and give a very solid feel to the house.
Can I buy the plans?
Yes, we can make up a set of plans for around $500-600 depending on the complexity of the design.
